Devlog #001: What about platform fighters?

Devlog #001

On the first day of development for the fighting game that I want to create there were just pure question marks in my head?
How do I create a platform fighter? I loved playing Super Smash Bros. when I was younger but that is now longer away than I imagined.

So now I am here and I want to start developing my own platform fighter. For this, I just wanted to jump straight into it and try to solve the first questions on the way.

Making smart goals is the key. So I will start by building the blocks of the game that make it distinguishable.

This is the screen of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate from 2021

As you can see there are many things to do. Create platforms, create characters, and a ton of mechanics if I just want to recreate this game in its original form. Create or just use animations from other form and combine it all together into one cohesive game that is nice to play together. Ah, the multiplayer not to forget.

My first list of ToDo’s for this project which I start at my university at Köln International School Of Design is the following. The list shall be as actionable as possible. It won’t be long or extensive as it might be just to figure out which problems there might be to solve.

The ToDo List

  • Create the world
    • Create the 3dimensional space in Unity
    • Create a platform
      • Make it a collision object
  • Player
    • Create a player object
    • Make it move
      • Add animation for movement (Steps for Animation)
    • Jump
      • Add script
      • Animation
    • Punch
      • Script
      • Animation
  • Camera
    • Cinemachine?
    • What does it follow?

These are the first kind of actionable goals I want to follow through with. Till then I will update this blog dependent on my progress of the game.
